Course Summary

If you want to study physics at Sheffield but you don’t have the right A Levels, this is the most direct route. The foundation year gives you the necessary grounding in maths, physics and chemistry. Complete it to the required standard and you’re guaranteed a place on one of our degree courses. Physics at Sheffield gives you hands-on experience working with leading academics on real research projects. We teach the IT and programming skills that you’ll need for a career in industrial research. And there are plenty of opportunities for fieldwork: investigating dark matter 1km underground at Boulby Mine, or 2,400m above sea level at an observatory in the Canary Islands. We also send students to CERN in Geneva, for work placements and visits. Many of our graduates become research scientists in academia and industry. Others go into aerospace, telecommunications, defence and energy. Employers include Ernst & Young, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Toshiba and the Home Office.
