Course Summary

2nd in the Russell Group, 5th in the UK for Teaching on our Course (NSS Subject Results 2020) Our curriculum and our expertise spread across seven different areas: performance, composition, musicology, ethnomusicology, music psychology, musical industries and music technology. The degree is carefully designed to develop your skills as an independent musician and music researcher. Our world-class tutors emphasise the contemporary as well as the traditional; and we bring our expertise and ideas into all our teaching, so you’ll benefit from being introduced to the latest discoveries at the forefront of musical research. We approach all genres with equal enthusiasm allowing you to specialise in your area of interest. We offer academic and practical study in most music genres, including classical, pop, jazz, folk and world music. Opportunities include taking part in the University Concerts series, which usually features around 100 performances a year. Students have the chance to write for our New Music Ensemble and can audition to conduct or play a concerto with our Symphony and Chamber Orchestras. Sound Junction offers regular opportunities to use music technology to create electroacoustic compositions and to meet leading acousmatic composers from around the world. Our students have enjoyed success in a range of musical careers, including both classical and popular performance, work as a music journalist and experience of composing for film and television, with one recent graduate recording their music at Abbey Road Studios, for example. Many also continue to masters or doctorate level. You'll also find our graduates in organisations ranging from Penguin Publishing to the Royal Opera House.
