Learn one, two or three languages with this highly flexible degree. Choose from French, German, Spanish, Russian, Catalan, Czech, Dutch, Italian, Luxembourgish and Portuguese, combining the practicalities of language learning with modules that explore the literature, linguistics, politics, history, philosophy and film studies of your chosen languages.* You’ll also spend your third year studying or working abroad in one or two countries, immersing yourself in the culture and honing your language skills by living alongside native speakers.
The School of Languages and Cultures is a leading centre for research, learning and teaching in modern languages and cultures. At Sheffield, you’ll find a dynamic and vibrant international community of experts in literary studies, cultural history, visual cultures, film and performance. Our students are involved in extracurricular activities ranging from research projects, language mentoring in schools, active department student societies and our modern languages drama festival.
This degree will equip you for a variety of careers within an increasingly interconnected, multilingual and multicultural world. Our graduates are excellent communicators, adaptable and culturally aware. They have gone on to careers in a wide variety of fields, including international development, business and banking, translating and interpreting, journalism, teaching, publishing, international sales, and marketing and communications.
You don't need to have studied a modern foreign language at A Level to apply for this course - we welcome applications from anyone who can demonstrate an aptitude and passion for languages and other cultures.
*If you choose to study just one language, you will choose from French, German, Spanish or Russian. Italian is available as a second language option only, and we do not offer a year abroad in Italy. Luxembourgish is available to study from second year.
