Course Summary

This combination of Linguistics and Modern Languages & Cultures will deepen your understanding of how language and languages work. You’ll study the inner workings of language, whilst at the same time applying this knowledge in your study of either one or two modern foreign languages, choosing from French, German, Russian, Spanish, Dutch, Czech, Italian, Catalan, Luxembourgish or Portugese.* Our world-leading research, active student community and civic ethos makes Sheffield one of the world's most exciting places to study Linguistics alongside Modern Languages. Our academic staff are experts in their field and use their cutting-edge research to inform their teaching and the content of the modules that you'll study. They're also passionate, dedicated teachers who work tirelessly to ensure their students are inspired. This degree will equip you for a variety of careers within an increasingly interconnected, multilingual and multicultural world. Our graduates are articulate, creative communicators who know how to structure an argument, and how to analyse one. They are also adaptable and culturally aware. As well as careers in journalism, international development, teaching, the charity sector, copywriting, and translating and interpreting, our alumni have gone on to be web developers, speech and language therapists, accountants, engineers, computer scientists and legal practitioners. *If you choose to study just one language, you will choose from French, German, Spanish or Russian. Italian is available as a second language option only, and we do not offer a year abroad in Italy. Luxembourgish is available to study from second year.
