If you don't meet the entry requirements for our BSc (Hons) course, or you’d like extra preparation before starting degree-level study, we recommend you join the foundation year – which has been designed to encourage exploration and experimentation. This course prepares you for an exciting career as a globally-minded designer, equipped to identify and respond to future challenges. You’ll experience employability-driven learning through real-world projects. You'll be equipped with the visual and technical skills necessary to become an industrial designer or technological product designer. **How you learn:** You'll learn from staff who are actively involved in research and commercial design delivery. Through our engaging project briefs, you'll explore creative thinking, sustainable design, enabling technologies, new product development, advanced 3D CAD and design for manufacture. These experiences help you to innovate and instigate change. Linked to the leading Design Futures Research and Consultancy Group, the course offers unique 'real-time' insights that allow you to develop your professional design and research & development skills. You learn through: - studio-based design projects (individual/group) - lectures - technical skills workshops - work experiences and placements - live design projects - field trips - presentations and feedback sessions - work review sessions - studio-based design projects - blackboard online learning portal - **Applied learning - Work placements** You'll have opportunities to arrange single or multiple work placement/s in between your second and third years of the full course. Placements give you real-world experience to prepare for your future career. Previous students have secured placements with companies including Black & Decker, Bosch, DePuy Synthes, Gripple and JCB. **Live projects** You'll engage in authentic work experiences in each year of the course, working with external partners and live briefs. We have excellent relationships with a vast range of companies – from exciting start-ups to large multinational organisations. You'll undertake a range of projects set by external organisations. You’ll build competencies as you apply design thinking from taught sessions to real-world contexts, pitching project outcomes to company representatives and potentially receiving payment for designs. Recently our students have worked on consumer electronics, the Internet of Things (IOT) and sustainable ‘circular economy’ products. **Networking opportunities** Sheffield Hallam's Careers Connect mentoring scheme allows you to gain professional insights and support from a personal mentor working in your field of interest. We also organise an annual two-day employability event, allowing you to network with commercial partners and participate in one-to-one portfolio reviews. Our annual degree show is a great opportunity for graduating students to showcase their work.

We may also accept you, if you have limited qualifications but can show evidence of ability and a genuine commitment to studying Art and Design. We treat the foundation year as part of the Art and Design degree programme. Offers made to students will be for four years of study (or five years of study including a placement). This is made up of the foundation year plus one of our Art and Design degrees. Please note the University will only admit students who are aged 18 or over at the point of enrolment.
