The world we live in today is profoundly dependent on the talents of electronic and electrical engineers. Creating, designing and managing the systems that keep things running is vital in our society – from the generation of heat, light and power to the ease and speed of communication that we’ve come to expect. On this course you’ll study topics including electronic design, communications, software engineering, computer modelling, microelectronics, power generation and distribution, electrical machines, signal processing, renewable energy systems, smart building systems and instrumentation. We also offer BEng Honours Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Foundation Year where you study an initial foundation year to prepare for the course, and a degree apprenticeship course in a similar field. You’ll study the fundamentals of engineering science, applicable mathematics, and practical and project skills as well as developing scientific and analytical skills by studying electrical energy systems, machines, control engineering and electronic systems design. In the final year, specialist options enable you to undertake real-life inquiry, investigation, and discovery through a specific research topic, project or consultancy – making an original contribution to your discipline or related industry requirements. You learn through - lectures, tutorials and practical sessions - exams - assignments - project work - a group project **Applied learning - Work placements** You’ll develop employment attributes through work experience and research. The course offers you the chance to undertake an optional placement in Year 3 – helping you to build on the knowledge and skills developed on the course. Over 12 months you’ll be able to enhance your employability and develop your skills as an individual. We’ll be on hand to support you in applying for and finding suitable placement opportunities. We’re in regular contact with local and national companies – and we can help you with interview techniques and preparing your CV. Previous students have spent their placement year at companies including Siemens, Cummins, Network Rail, Caterpillar, Cetix, Power Control, Servelec Group, Abaco Systems, ARM, BG Solutions, Chesterfield and Heraeus Electro-Nite (UK).

Standard Qualification Requirements

This must include at least 64 points from two A levels or equivalent BTEC National qualifications including a Mathematics based subject AND at least one other relevant subject - Physics, Physical Science, Engineering Science, Computer Science, Chemistry, other Science/Technology subject. For example: BBC at A Level including relevant subjects. DMM in BTEC Extended Diploma in a relevant subject. A combination of qualifications which must include relevant subjects and may include AS levels and EPQ.

Access - an Access to HE Diploma with at least 45 credits at level 3 and 15 credits at level 2. At least 15 level 3 credits must be at merit grade or above, from a QAA-recognised Access to HE course, or an equivalent Access to HE certificate.


• Foundation - pass from our Extended Degree Programme Engineering and Mathematics, depending on academic performance We will make an offer to all applicants who are likely to achieve or better these entry requirements. We welcome applications from people of any age. We may be flexible in our normal offer if you can show a commitment to succeed and have the relevant skills and experience. This must show that you will benefit from and finish the course successfully. Please note the University will only admit students who are aged 18 or over at the point of enrolment.
