This course provides the specialist knowledge and expertise required for a career in electrical and electronic engineering. You'll be able to study a wide selection of topics – from electronic design, communications and software engineering to computer modelling, microelectronics, power generation and renewable energy systems. You’ll establish the fundamentals of engineering science, applicable mathematics, and practical and project skills and develop scientific and analytical skills by studying electrical energy systems, machines, control engineering and electronic systems design. In the final year, specialist options and projects enable you to undertake real-life inquiry, investigation, and discovery through a specific research topic, project or consultancy – making an original contribution to your discipline or related industry requirements. You learn through: - lectures, tutorials and practical sessions - examinations - assignments - project work - a group project - work experience - research **Applied learning - Live projects** Project-based learning – including live real-world projects – will help you develop the transferable skills and multi-disciplinary awareness so highly prized by industry. You’ll also take on a specialist role in a group project and start planning your career in detail. **Work placements** You’ll have the chance to undertake an optional placement in your third year – helping you to build on the knowledge and skills you develop on the course. Over 12 months you’ll be able to enhance your employability and develop your skills as an individual. We’ll be on hand to support you in applying for and finding suitable placement opportunities. We’re in regular contact with local and national companies – and we can help you with interview techniques and preparing your CV. Previous students have spent their placement year at companies including Siemens, Cummins, Network Rail, Caterpillar, Cetix, Power Control, Servelec Group, Abaco Systems, ARM, BG Solutions and Heraeus Electro-Nite. **Networking opportunities** Industry fully supports the course with work placements, course planning, visits, real projects, case studies and guest lecturers. These connections help to increase your career opportunities and employability. You’ll also have the opportunity to work alongside practising engineers who are industry-sponsored students studying part-time. Our industrial sponsors include Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery, BAE Systems, Tata Steel, Fairfield Control Systems and Bombardier Transportation. Every year the university holds a careers fair where more than 140 companies come to Sheffield Hallam and offer jobs and placement opportunities.

Standard Qualification Requirements

This must include at least 64 points from two A levels or equivalent BTEC National qualifications including Mathematics and at least one other science subject. For example: ABB at A Level including relevant subjects. DDM in BTEC Extended Diploma in a relevant subject. A combination of qualifications which must include relevant subjects and may include AS levels and EPQ

Access - an Access to HE Diploma with at least 45 credits at level 3 and 15 credits at level 2. At least 18 level 3 credits must be at merit grade or above, from a QAA-recognised Access to HE course, or an equivalent Access to HE certificate.


Foundation - pass from the preparatory year of our Extended Degree Programme Engineering and Mathematics, depending on academic performance. We will consider applicants who have studied other areas individually. Please contact us for more information.
