The course is suitable if you don't meet the entry requirements for our BA (Hons) Business and Enterprise Management course, or you want extra preparation before starting degree-level study. You share the first year with other Sheffield Business School foundation year students, then move on to the degree.
You work with real businesses and develop solutions while continually building your own profile with hands-on experience and industry interaction. You tailor your learning through specialist and elective modules taught by experts from the world of business and academia, in state-of-the-art facilities.
You learn through:

- individual projects
- digital learning platforms
- case studies
- formal presentations to peers and businesses
- fully considered business plans

In the foundation year, you'll study wider business topics, while specialising in your chosen subject area. You'll learn useful skills such as academic writing, work in diverse teams and learn to utilise a wide variety of data sources. In doing so, you'll fully prepare yourself for undergraduate study.
**Applied learning - Work placements**
You will have the opportunity to arrange a year-long work placement in between your third and fourth years. This gives you a real-world experience to prepare you for your future career, and useful industry contacts. Previous placement years have taken place at organisations such as 3M, BAE Systems, Hoya Lens UK, Microsoft, River Island Clothing and Asda.
There is also an opportunity to receive support in running your own business during this time. The Placement Year Enterprise Scheme allows you to receive a bursary from the University's Research and Innovation Office, alongside useful advice and facilities in the business centre. This support is also available for up to five years upon graduating.
**Field trips**
There are field trips that take place throughout the course.
**Networking opportunities**
With frequent guest speakers, a placement year and a close relationship with the local business community and our alumni, there are ample networking opportunities throughout the course.
