The Pearson BTEC Higher National Diploma in Business is designed to give students the business skills, knowledge and understanding they need to achieve high performance in the international business environment.
It provides students with the core skills required for a range of careers in business, including management, human resources, marketing, entrepreneurship, accounting and finance, while offering a balance between employability skills and essential knowledge. Students will develop their understanding of the major impact that new digital technologies have on the business environment and examine the opportunities and challenges presented by a global marketplace.
Students will be equipped with knowledge and understanding of culturally diverse organisations, cross-cultural issues, diversity and values, and to allow flexible study to meet local and specialist needs.
The Pearson BTEC Higher National qualifications in Business are designed to reflect the increasing need for high quality professional and technical education at levels 4 and 5. They provide students with a clear line of sight to employment and to a degree at level 6 if they choose. There is a flexible, unit-based structure to the course that focuses on developing the practical, interpersonal and thinking skills the student will need to succeed in employment and higher education.
Course Details - Modules
The HND is a Level 4 and Level 5 qualification made up of 240 credits. Students will study 8 units at level 4, each made up of 15 credits and 7 units at level 5 with a total of 240 credits over the 2 years.
Year 1/HNC Level 4- 120 credits
Business and the business environment
This unit will support students to develop their analytical thinking and use of key analytical tools (SWOT, TOWS) that businesses use as part of their daily operations.
Marketing processes and planning
The knowledge, understanding and skill sets students will gain on successfully completing this unit, will enhance their career opportunities, whether this is setting up their own business or employment in an organisation.
Human resource management (HRM)
On completion of the unit, students will be able to apply a range of people-management skills to enhance an organisations performance.
Digital business practice
The skills generated through an understanding of the practical and necessary use and application of relevant technologies will enable students to present themselves as being digitally literate to employers and give them the confidence to succeed in applying modern, digital methods.
Leadership and management
This unit gives students an understanding of motivational strategies covering intrinsic and extrinsic aspects of motivation, helping them to develop their own people management skills.
Accounting principles
On successful completion of this unit, students will develop skills in producing and analysing budgets, drawing up simple financial statements and using financial ratios to interpret performance.
Managing successful business projects
On completion of the unit, students will develop knowledge and skills required for managing and implementing small-scale business projects.
Operations management
Students will review how operations managers have to look externally as well as at internal processes, considering suppliers’ performance and customers throughout the supply chain. By the end of the unit, students will have an insight into the complex nature of operations, processes and supply chain management.

Research project
Key skills gained are reflection on engagement in the research process, academic writing and research and the ability to plan and make recommendations for a set project.
Organisational behaviour
On successful completion of this unit, students will have developed a range of transferable skills and knowledge to make a business more efficient.
Financial management
On completion of this unit, students will develop fundamental knowledge of and skills in financial management functions of an organisation and to progress to higher-level study and employment in financial management, investment banking and financial analysis.
Global business environment
On successful completion of this unit, students will understand the wider global environment in which organisations operate and apply their knowledge in such a way that they could advise senior managers on global matters that they might not have otherwise considered.
Marketing insights and analytics
The knowledge, understanding and skill sets those students gain on successfully completing this unit will enhance their career opportunities, whether they are starting their own business or working for an organisation in a marketing function.
Business strategy
On successful completion of this unit, students will have developed sufficient knowledge and understanding of strategy to make a positive, efficient and effective contribution to the development of business plans and operational direction.
Planning social media campaigns
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to analyse a market to plan and develop strategic communication campaigns through social media.
