Course Summary

RWCMD is a world leader in the training of designers for performance. The Design department offers immersive, hands-on practical training for students wanting to work across the theatre, event, film and television industries. RWCMD’s courses offer intensive training across set design and construction, costume design and construction, prop making, model making, computer aided design, and puppetry. Students find themselves not only at the centre of the College’s diverse creative community, but engaged in a wider international exchange through the Design department’s networks. The Design department enjoys close relationships within a thriving Creative Industries sector in Wales and beyond, hosting regular visits and talks by leading international practitioners, and placement opportunities with renowned venues, TV and film production companies. Recent students have undertaken placements at venues such as the Royal Opera House, the National Theatre, Theatr Clwyd, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru and Sherman Theatre, and with companies such as Bay Productions, Bad Wolf / 4 Wood, and Cardiff Theatrical Services. An A-Level or an equivalent level 3 qualification in art and design is the minimum requirement for entry. Equivalent qualifications include Scottish Highers, BTEC National Diploma/Certificate, WBQ, International Baccalaureate, Advanced GNVQ, AVCE or Advanced Diploma (Level 3), or recognised international qualifications.
