Course Summary

Our new BEng Software Engineering programme is designed for students who want to focus their studies on the design, maintenance and development of software systems. The demand for software engineers has never been higher. Companies and institutions from a variety of sectors are constantly looking for innovators who can keep up with rapid advancements in technology and software development. This course will provide you with all the necessary tools to meet that demand and forge a career as a technological trailblazer. As part of an ever-growing computing curriculum here at Roehampton, you will gain a strong understanding of other core computing skills such as databases and cyber security, while specialising in a sought-after skill that will be an imperative for organisations spanning across many different industries – helping you become a competent and well-rounded computing professional. You will be supported by leading experts in computing, software engineering and cyber security throughout the course. In your second and third years, you will delve into software architecture and design, project management and secure software development, all while developing your knowledge of programming languages. You will also be given the opportunity to become a Certified Ethical Hacker via the EC Council. Our BEng Software Engineering course follows an active blended learning style, with some lectures replaced by workshops and seminars. This means that you’ll be in a learning environment focused on collaborative learning in the lab spaces of our state-of-the-art media centre, the Sir David Bell Building, and be immersed in an environment that you’ll experience in the IT industry. Employability in computing programmes is embedded throughout the curriculum, with a focus on project-based assessment that attempts to mimic real-life scenarios. This is especially demonstrated in the collaborative nature of the teaching, the team working elements and the Final Year project. You’ll gain hands on experience and a solid understanding of what it’s like to work in a professional software development team, preparing you for the world of work after you graduate.
