Course Summary

You’ll develop advanced technical skills and gain a wide-ranging understanding of contemporary photographic culture by engaging with provocative theories. Plus, you’ll benefit from being on the doorstep of London‘s vibrant creative scene, with some of the world’s leading magazines, agencies, studios and galleries within easy reach. Our Photography BA will develop your visual and intellectual engagement with photography as well as your technical skills. You'll develop a range of key photographic skills including the use of 35mm film cameras, film processing, DSLR cameras, medium and large format cameras as well as studio and location lighting. You'll become familiar with the use of relevant software packages including Photoshop and Capture One, as well as digital darkroom skills such as scanning and printing. On campus you'll have access to two industry standard studios, a darkroom and two Mac suites that will facilitate your work. You'll gain an in depth understanding of contemporary and historical photographic practices and their diverse uses in various cultural fields such as journalism, fine art, fashion, editorial, advertising, and web design. You'll also explore the relationship between photography and cognate disciplines such as cultural studies, anthropology and philosophy. The course will familiarise you with the work of key theorists and practitioners involved in the ongoing development of the field such as Roland Barthes and Broomberg and Chanarin and you'll acquire a range of practical skills, such as project management, presentation skills, and problem identification and solving. During the course you'll develop your own portfolio of work and for the past seven years, final year students have exhibited their work at Free Range in Brick Lane, which provides an ideal platform for exposure as well as opportunities to meet vital industry contacts. We currently offer opportunities to explore career options, which will enable you to understand different career choices, evaluate your own strengths and weaknesses and learn how to present an excellent application. There are also opportunities to undertake a work placement.

Course Details - Modules

In your first year, you will undertake practical projects exploring both analogue and digital photography. Projects can involve producing prints, photobooks and working with image and text. A series of workshops will introduce you to key technical skills including software, camera and lighting skills. Plus, some modules will cover theoretical materials on visual culture with the aim of developing your analytical and written skills. In the second year, you will have the opportunity to focus your practical and conceptual skills in a number of different areas, including working with portrait, landscape and documentary photography. We currently offer a module on Commodity Culture, which could see you developing your own advertising campaign, book, magazine, fashion spread, website or exhibition. Other modules currently include Photography and the Home and Identity and Difference. The emphasis in your third year is on your independent project and research. You'll get the opportunity to develop and produce your own body of high-quality work to an industry-level standard. In other modules, you will be able to continue with improve your portfolio or your critical understanding of photography. You will also have the option of undertaking an extended piece of written research, supported by our team of expert staff.
