Course Summary

Studying Drama at Roehampton is the best of both worlds. You’ll be a stone’s throw away from the famous West End and an array of incredible local performance spaces, set in one of the world’s most exciting performance cities, while studying a curriculum of exciting and varied modules with passionate staff who are experts and active practitioners in their field. This degree provides you with a breadth of understanding of theatre and performance around the world and the impact it has had on our history, culture and identity. You will have the chance to develop a heightened socio-political awareness and a thorough grounding in both conventional and unconventional approaches to performance-making, writing and production. You’ll learn about yourself as a creative, and in the process, equip yourself with the tools you need to thrive in the industry, whether it be on or off the stage. The degree is practice-focused and project-based; from day one, you will gain valuable hands-on experience working with our internationally recognized faculty and professional arts organisations. There will be countless opportunities to watch and discuss theatre, read, explore and stage plays, and write, devise and perform your own work. Working across performance for live and digital platforms, you will become skilled, innovative, adaptable artists and entrepreneurs, capable of planning, producing, managing and making both socially-engaged and commercial projects within a variety of professional platforms. You’ll also complete your final research project, where you will write a play or dissertation, create a performance, or produce a practice-as-research project that mixes genres and media – producing work you can use as a springboard for your next move after graduation. To enrich your learning, your course includes tickets to a range of theatre productions, as well as trips to exhibitions and cultural events, meaning that you will be able to fully immerse yourself in one of the performance capitals of the world. You will visit some of London’s most well-known theatres, seeing a variety of high-profile shows, thought-provoking plays and cutting-edge performance events. We also offer regular workshop and seminar sessions with visiting artists and scholars, hosted by the Centre for Performance & Creative Exchange, the main forum for our lively research culture, and the base for over 40 artists and researchers following our MPhil/PhD courses. Regardless of confidence or previous practical experience, you will have the opportunity to engage heavily in every aspect of the course. In doing so, you will find yourself in a supportive, inclusive community of staff and peers dedicated to helping you flourish as a student, and a graduate, of Drama.
