Choose one of our four core languages: * French * German * Italian * Spanish These languages are offered at beginner’s, intermediate or advanced level, depending on your experience. Our flexible, supportive teaching style will enable you to become confident and highly skilled in your chosen core language. You will master the written and spoken fundamentals of the language, graduating with near-native command. Direct access to our staff for help and feedback ensures you develop your language skills to the best of your ability. You'll study cultural modules that develop your understanding of the cultures of the countries in which the language is spoken, from their literary and cinematic traditions to their history, politics and linguistics. Optional modules include introductory study of one of the following languages (subject to availability): * Arabic * British Sign Language * Chinese (Mandarin) * French * German * Italian * Japanese * Modern Greek * Russian * Spanish With these modules, you'll reach independent-user competency by the time you graduate. **International relations** Develop a deeper understanding of the world through your study of international relations. You’ll examine the critical issues facing our world, adding your voice to these stimulating discussions. You will: * gain a strong grounding in fundamental elements, such as political ideas and international relations theory * choose from a wide range of topical modules, from European contemporary democracy to international terrorism * participate in United Nations and Middle East simulations, getting a direct feel for political process. Most of your contact time will be in small teaching groups, allowing you to interact directly with our experts. **Year Abroad** Between your second and final year, you'll spend a year abroad to expand your linguistic skills and intercultural understanding. Choose to study at a partner university, go on a work placement, or work as a language teaching assistant. **Careers** Overall, 89% of our modern language students and 92% of politics and international relations graduates are in work or further study 15 months after finishing their course (Graduate Outcomes Survey, 2017/18; based on First Degree responders from Languages and Cultures, and based on First Degree responders from Politics and International Relations). Recent modern languages graduates have found careers in translation, teaching, business and finance, the arts, and marketing. Recent employers include Sony Europe, the Civil Service, Oxford University Press, BNP Paribas, Dow Jones, Vodafone and PwC. Past graduates have also put their political analysis skills to use in various governmental departments, political research units, think tanks, non-governmental organisations, and parliament. Others have found careers in media, management consultancy, and banking.
