Choose one of our four core languages: * French * German * Italian * Spanish These languages are offered at beginner's, intermediate or advanced level, depending on your experience. Our flexible, supportive teaching style will enable you to become confident and highly skilled in your chosen language(s). You'll master the written and spoken fundamentals of the language, graduating with near-native command. Direct access to our staff for help and feedback ensures you develop your language skills to the best of your ability. You'll study cultural modules that develop your understanding of the cultures of the countries in which the language is spoken, from their literary and cinematic traditions to their history, politics and linguistics. Optional modules include introductory study of one of the following languages (subject to availability): * Arabic * British Sign Language * Chinese (Mandarin) * French * German * Italian * Japanese * Modern Greek * Russian * Spanish With these modules, you'll reach independent-user competency by the time you graduate. **History** Discover a thousand years of global history, spanning Britain, Europe, Africa, America, the Middle East and South Asia. Explore people, politics, revolution, culture and concepts. Our academics teach the skills you need to study and research as a historian, as you shape your degree through our extensive range of modules. Your learning will benefit from: * **academic expertise**. In 2020, we achieved a 91% satisfaction score for teaching on our BA History course in the National Student Survey. * **small, interactive seminars**. Discuss and debate ideas with staff and students. * **employability skills**. Our History Education, Discovering Archives and Collections, and Going Public modules offer short work placements. * **field trips in the UK and abroad**. Past trips have included Winchester, Westminster, Paris and Berlin. You can also enrich your language studies through your history modules. For example, French students could discover the people and politics of the French Revolution, or German students could examine Cold War Berlin. **Year Abroad** Between your second and final year, you'll spend a year abroad to expand your linguistic skills and intercultural understanding. Choose to study at a partner university, go on a work placement, or work as a language teaching assistant. **Careers** 89% of our modern language students and 93% of history students are in work or further study 15 months after graduating. (Graduate Outcomes Survey, 2017/18; based on First Degree responders from Languages and Cultures, and First Degree responders from History.) Recent modern languages graduates have found roles in translation, teaching, business and finance, the arts, and marketing. Recent employers include Sony, the Civil Service, Oxford University Press, Dow Jones, Vodafone and PwC. Employers of past history graduates include the Museum of London, British Army, BBC, KPMG, Department for Education, Deloitte, and National Trust.
