Course Summary

Study one, two or three languages on our three-year BA Modern Languages course. This degree is similar to our four-year BA Modern Languages course, but does not include a year abroad. The three-year degree is aimed at students who are unable to spend a year abroad because of special circumstances – contact languages@reading.ac.uk to find out more. You’ll choose to study up to three of our core languages: * French * German * Italian * Spanish. These languages are offered at intermediate and advanced level. **Other languages** Our programme also allows you to combine up to two core languages with one or two of our additional languages. Choose from Arabic, British Sign Language, Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, Modern Greek or Russian (subject to availability). Your study options include: - one core language - two core languages - one core language plus one additional language - two core languages plus one additional language - one core language plus two additional languages - three core languages. **Placements opportunities** You’ll spend eight weeks in a language-rich environment to expand your language skills and develop your intercultural understanding of your language(s). Your placement can be taken as one eight-week block or in separate instalments throughout your degree. Examples of placement locations include: * summer schools abroad * work placements at companies or organisations where your target language is used * local schools where your target language is taught. **Modules** Alongside your core language modules, you’ll also study cultural modules to enhance your understanding of the countries in which the language is spoken. The number of cultural modules you take will depend on whether you are specialising in one specific language, or combining two or three core languages. They cover topics such as literary and cinematic traditions, history, politics, and linguistics. **Language levels and requirements for core languages** You can study core languages from intermediate or advanced level. If you choose to study three core languages, at least one of them has to be taken from advanced level. By the time you graduate, you’ll have achieved C1-level proficiency – which is a near-native ability. **Language levels and requirements for other languages** Our additional languages start at beginner’s level only. By the time you graduate, you’ll have achieve independent-user competency. **Careers** Overall, 89% of our students are in work or further study 15 months after finishing their course (Graduate Outcomes Survey 2017/18; First Degree and other undergraduate responders from Languages and Cultures).
