Course Summary

Explore new and emerging art as well as historical and contemporary forms with our BA Fine Art with Integrated Foundation. Through this four-year degree, you’ll develop as an artist as you experiment with a range of subjects and media. Your first, foundation year will provide an introduction to studying fine art, as well as university life. For example, you will: - learn the processes and expectations of studio practice through projects, workshop training, talks and group work - gain an introduction to art history - develop your core skills, including researching, academic study, and writing - have access to specialist support and guidance - become fully integrated into life at the University of Reading. As your studies progress, you’ll explore art in its historical, theoretical, social and cultural contexts, and develop your guided independent studio practice through: - one-to-one tutorials, group seminars, lectures and visiting artist talks - exhibition opportunities - workshops - visits to museums and art galleries. **Facilities for BA Fine Art with Integrated Foundation** The Department of Art at the University of Reading has an extensive range of facilities and studios open to you 24 hours a day, seven days a week. - In our studio workshops you can focus on construction, printing and casting. - Explore photography in our darkrooms. - We also have digital workshops with facilities for film and video editing, imaging, sound, virtual reality and web building tools, and a dedicated audio-visual recording room. **Professional Placement** You’ll be encouraged to take advantage of placement opportunities that can develop your professional skills and prepare you for a range of careers. Previous art students at Reading have: - taken part in exhibitions and public art commissions - delivered workshops at the Tate Modern - worked with different artists and designers through organisations such as Studio Voltaire and Frieze Art Fair. **Study Abroad** Study art abroad through our links to other universities in countries such as the USA, Canada, Australia, South Korea, Hungary, the Czech Rebublic, France and Switzerland. Depending on your course, you could spend two weeks, a term, or an academic year abroad. This can be part of a standard three-year degree, an extended four-year degree, or a shorter length of time such as a summer school. We’ll help you decide where to go and for how long, guide you through the application process, and support you when you’re abroad. To find out more about the benefits of studying abroad, and discover where you could go, visit the Study Abroad website. Past students have participated in week-long international study trips to Madrid and Berlin, while others have participated in an exchange partnership scheme, organising exhibitions with universities in China and Japan.
