Course Summary

Chemistry is a core science subject that touches almost every aspect of our daily lives, and will become increasingly important in our future knowledge-based society. Chemists develop life-saving drugs, polymers, pest-control agents and catalysts that can enhance our quality of life beyond measure. Four-year MSci degrees are available for high-calibre students with the ability and aspiration to practise Chemistry at the highest levels. BSc students with excellent performance may transfer to the MSci at any time up to the end of Stage 2.

Stage 1: genetics and molecular biology; physical theory; introduction to mathematics for chemists and engineers; skills for physical chemistry; inorganic chemistry 1; organic chemistry level 1.

Standard Qualification Requirements

Two Science subjects required to include Chemistry. Relevant Science subjects - Biology, Computer Science, ICT (not Applied), Digital Technology, Electronics, Environmental Science, Environmental Technology, Geography, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Technology & Design. Other subjects considered on an individual basis. A-level General Studies and Critical Thinking are normally excluded from offers. However, the grade achieved may be taken into account when results are published in August and may be used in a tie-break situation.

Advanced Higher Chemistry + a second Science subject required (see list under A-level). Offers are normally made on the basis of a combination of Scottish Highers and Advanced Highers.

6,6,6 at Higher Level to include Chemistry and a second Science subject (see list under A-level).

To include Higher Level grade H2 in Chemistry and a second Science (see list under A-level). If not offered at Higher Level then Ordinary Level grade O4 in English and Mathematics.
