**Overview** If you want to work in property, where the risks are high and the rewards even higher, this accredited BSc (Hons) Property Development degree course gives you the entrepreneurial spirit and commercial, managerial, technical and creative skills you need to start a career in this field. From the refurbishment of a small terraced house to overseeing the construction of a multi-million-pound development, you’ll emerge from this course with the knowledge and ability to tackle the various challenges of this fast-moving industry. As well as property development, this course serves as an excellent foundation for careers in surveying, property law and building conservation. **Accredited by:** This course is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). **On this course you'll:** - Use specialist building facilities, including our experimental house, environmental, materials, structures, hydraulics and geotechnics labs, and suite of Building Information Modelling (BIM) software - Get out of the classroom through on-site visits and an optional European study trip – past destinations include Barcelona, Paris, Turkey, Dublin, Denmark and the Netherlands - Be inspired with visits from guest speakers with key industry experience, including property developers and land agents - Solve real problems as part of our partnerships with charities, as well as local and global organisations **Work experience and career planning** To give you the best chance of securing a great job when you graduate, our Careers and Employability service can help you find relevant work experience during your course. We can help you identify placements, internships, voluntary roles and freelancing opportunities that will complement your studies. **Placement year** After your second year, you can do an optional work placement year to get valuable longer-term work experience in the industry. Course Details - Modules

Our courses are designed to provide a thoroughly professional education in property development. In the first year you will have an introduction to all the elements associated with property while also developing your analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills. In the second and third year you will have a wide range of units to study. You are able to elect specialist themes that allow you to tailor your studies to suit your career intentions or personal interests. In your final year, consolidate the skills you have learnt and complete your dissertation on a topic of your choice. Each module on this course is worth a certain number of credits. In each year, you need to study modules worth a total of 120 credits. For example, 4 modules worth 20 credits and 1 module worth 40 credits. Due to changing circumstances as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we may need to make changes to courses to ensure your safety and to ensure compliance with Government guidelines. We'll provide you with as much notice as possible of any such changes. Your course leader will inform you of these. Changes may include things such as modules being taught in teaching block 2 instead of teaching block 1 and teaching activities occurring in smaller group sizes. Year 1: Core modules in this year include: - Computer Aided Design (CAD) Building Information Modelling (BIM) - Construction, Design and Sustainability - Introduction to Law for the Built Environment - Introduction to Property Valuation - Multidisciplinary Project - Property Economics and Financial Accounting There are no optional modules in this year. Year 2 Core modules in this year include: - Planning Procedures and Practice - Professional Studies and Applied Project - Property Investment and Development - Urban Regeneration - Valuation and Commercial Property Management Optional modules in this year currently include: - Applied Building Information Modelling (BIM) - Heritage Property - International Built Environment Fieldwork - Introduction to Project Management Principles - Modern Foreign Language Placement Year (optional) On this course, you can do an optional work placement year between your 2nd and 3rd years to get valuable experience working in industry. We’ll help you secure a work placement that fits your situation and ambitions. You’ll get mentoring and support throughout the year. Year 3 Core modules in this year include: - Building Pathology - Individual Major Project - Land Law and Landlord and Tenant Law - Professional Practice - Statutory Valuations Optional modules in this year include: - Contract Administration, Claims Management and Dispute Resolution

Course Details – Assessment Method

You'll be assessed through: - written exams - web assessments - essays and reports - project presentations - a dissertation You’ll be able to test your skills and knowledge informally before you do assessments that count towards your final mark. You can get feedback on all practice and formal assessments so you can improve in the future. The way you’re assessed may depend on the modules you select. As a guide, students on this course last year were typically assessed as follows: - Year 1 students: 50% by written exams, 8% by practical exams and 42% by coursework - Year 2 students: 47% by written exams, 4% by practical exams and 49% by coursework - Year 3 students: 28% by written exams, 17% by practical exams and 55% by coursework
