Course Summary

Learn to work in diverse practice settings or pursue a career in research. Develop skills in leadership and the management of complex patients across a range of conditions including neurological, sports and respiratory, in a variety of healthcare locations such as hospitals and specialist rehabilitation centres as well as patients’ homes. Our innovative, enquiry-based learning approach means that you learn from ‘real-life’ clinical scenarios that reflect conditions that physiotherapists see and uncover innovative areas for research. This course is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. You will benefit from our established track record of working with local professional sports teams, the armed forces and extracurricular experience such as pop-up clinics for sporting events or providing Functional Fitness MOTs. The 4 year programme will develop your clinical, leadership, management and research skills allowing you to graduate armed with the skills and experience to treat complex patients and promote progression within your physiotherapy career. You could find yourself working in hospitals, health centres, the local community, with the elderly, the disabled or for charitable organisations, both in the UK or abroad. - Complete 1,000 hours of supervised clinical practice in varied clinical settings over the first three years. - Undertake a negotiated work-based experience in year four. - Work with a physiotherapy team engaged in research at an international level to develop your own individual research project. - Learn to study independently and in small groups with our enquiry-based learning curriculum. - Develop your leadership skills and gain insight into Global health issues. - Become autonomous practitioners with enhanced clinical reasoning skills. - Benefit from research-informed teaching. - Graduate armed with the skills and experience to find employment in a variety of environments. - On successful completion of the course, you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council and apply for full membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.

Course Details - Modules

In your first year, inter-professional learning with students from other healthcare disciplines will give you an insight into what it is to be a ‘professional’. You will enjoy physiotherapy modules relating to anatomy and physiology as well as the importance of health promotion and exercise. You will develop your understanding of applied movement science and evidence based physiotherapy practice and embark on a rewarding clinical placement. In your second year, you will learn about the rehabilitation of patients with cardiorespiratory, musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. You will take increased responsibility in practice, utilising your theoretical knowledge and developing the confidence and personal skills required to be an autonomous physiotherapist. You will undertake learning around research methodology. In your third year you will study more complex case scenarios in the key areas of physiotherapy practice. You will have the opportunity to develop an individual research proposal in an area of your choice. During your placements, emphasis is on the levels of professional mastery and fitness for practice that you will require for registration and employment. In your final year you will focus on leadership skills, enhancing clinical reasoning and practice in physiotherapy and undertake a negotiated work-based experience in a physiotherapy field of your choice. You will have an option to explore either innovations in healthcare or healthcare from an International perspective. You will have the opportunity to undertake an individual supervised research project in an area of your choice.
