Course Summary

The over-arching aim of this integrated Masters programme in occupational therapy is to offer a challenging and rewarding study experience to its students in order to prepare them for the working world of health and social care. Developing future practitioners, who are confident in delivering professional and inter-professional practice and contributing to future research. The programme curriculum has been derived from the evidence base of the occupational nature of people; viewing individuals as being driven to engage in occupation, in order to meet their biological, psychological, social and spiritual needs. Occupational therapy uses the concept of meaningful occupation to help promote and restore health and wellbeing. The integrated Masters programme intends to produce highly proficient clinicians who are skilled at critically evaluating and synthesising theory in relation to contemporary occupational therapy practice at postgraduate level. Graduates from the programme will be confident in their knowledge and understanding of occupational science and people as occupational beings throughout the life cycle. The curriculum will explore philosophy of the profession and the underpinning sciences that guide practice. In addition, students will develop skills in reflection and an appreciation of life-long ready for a rewarding career. The innovative design of the integrated Masters enables students to develop their understanding of the occupational therapy philosophy over the course of four years. The initial year of the MOccTh (Hons) is fully integrated with the BSc (Hons) occupational therapy programme. Then in the 2nd and 3rd year, a slight variation in the modules completed will enable those on the MOccTh (Hons) programme to work with inter-professional colleagues to prepare for Masters level study. The final year of the programme, facilitates the production of an individual research project and core modules consolidating students clinical reasoning skills. In addition, students can tailor their programme through selecting to complete a module exploring either international practice or innovation in healthcare.
