Course Summary

This programme will equip students with the knowledge, skills, interpersonal and cultural competence required to positively contribute to the health of childbearing women and their families, through individualised midwifery care, promoting continuity of care, personalisation and choice. On completion, students will achieve a BSc (Hons) Midwifery, and will also be eligible to register as Midwives with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Each year of this three-year programme includes 45 weeks of learning, with 50% of this time spent on clinical placement. Clinical placements are provided in the maternity units across the South West of England, where practice supervisors support students to learn and progress to achieve the required NMC standards of proficiency for midwives. A dedicated team of midwifery lecturers and associate professors based at the University of Plymouth also facilitates student learning. The team includes an experienced and diverse group of professionals with a range of clinical and academic backgrounds. The first year of the programme includes initial modules that will focus on the midwife as a professional and practitioner, clinical skills, factors influencing health and wellbeing, medication calculation and an introduction to research. The second year will build on essential midwifery knowledge and skills, and extend students’ understanding and application of theory and research to all areas of midwifery practice. The final year will include a research or practice development project, and enable students to develop the ability to support women with more complex needs through pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period (including the newborn and infant physical examination – NIPE). Students qualifying as midwives following completion of the BSc (Hons) Midwifery at the University of Plymouth go on to practice as autonomous practitioners across the UK, with the potential to practice midwifery almost anywhere in the world. The programme will also equip graduates for further educational development at MSc level and beyond.

Course Details - Modules

In year one, lay the foundations for your career as a midwife, from developing clinical skills and professional attitudes to learning about human reproductive biology. Discover the sociological and psychological impacts of pregnancy and birth. Develop your professional communication skills, improve your skills in IT, reflective practice, literature searching, essay writing, resource creation and exam technique. Before Christmas, undertake the first of your supervised clinical placements in maternity settings. Building on Year 1 biology studies, you’ll learn more about preconception, conception and childbearing. Learn about complications and conditions particular to pregnancy and birth, the role a midwife plays in a multi-disciplinary team and the importance of safe medicine administration. A team-based learning module will introduce you to the essentials of research. Put your improved clinical and theoretical skills into practice on placement, gaining experience outside of midwifery settings. In your final year, you’ll further develop clinical skills for planning, assessing, implementing and evaluating pregnancy and childbirth care. Carrying your own caseload, you’ll see what it takes to be an effective practising midwife. You’ll learn how to manage complications in labour and birth, as well as handling emergencies. Using what you’ve learnt on the course, you’ll undertake a research proposal in your chosen area, and enhance your employability by preparing for mentorship and newborn/ infant examination. The modules shown for this course or programme are those being studied by current students, or expected new modules. Modules are subject to change depending on year of entry.
