Course Summary

This Top-Up course enables you to gain an in-depth practical understanding of the role of human resource management (HRM) in today's businesses, which sets you apart in the world of graduate employment. The course involves extensive involvement from guest speakers, as well as a range of practical activities, role play and case studies, enabling you to apply your knowledge of HR to real-life scenarios. You’ll be taught by staff with considerable depth of human resource management experience from large employers such as the NHS and have undertaken research for professional bodies such as CIPD and ACAS. You will also be supported in your study by subject tutors and receive individual support for your academic and personal development from your personal tutor. You will acquire improved competences that will significantly enhance your employability in an HR role. All undergraduate modules within Plymouth Business School have integrated within them a CV building activity, for example, through micro-credentialing; real world problem-based learning; or embedded direct employer activity. We do this because we know it is key to student academic and graduate success.

Course Details - Modules

Semester 1 - All students study a core module in human resource management, and then choose two optional modules from the choice of: international and comparative human resource management, organisational leadership or managing change. Upon successful completion of the first semester you can then go on to opt for either route 1 or route 2 for your second semester. The course is split into two routes, depending on your specialism, with a mixture of core and optional modules common to both routes. This structure allows you to tailor your degree to match your interests, enhancing your employability options upon completion. Semester 2 (Route 1): There is only one core module this semester- the final project, which is in the form of a management report and will be a culmination of all the skills you have acquired during semester 1. You then have one optional module to study in addition to the project, either equality and diversity in the workplace or women in business. Semester 2 (Route 2): This semester is comprised of three core modules: current issues in management, equality and diversity in the workplace and women in business. This route is better suited to those who do not wish to complete a research project. If you are an international student this would be our recommended route. Please note that programme structures and individual modules are subject to amendment from time to time as part of the University’s curriculum enrichment programme and in line with changes in the University’s policies and requirements.
