Course Summary

Join our BA (Hons) History with Foundation programme and benefit from a foundation year specially designed to support you in developing all the essential skills for success in higher education. Study the history of piracy and sea power a stone’s throw from one of the UK's most historic ports and chart your own course to the future through our partnerships with organisations like The Box and the National Trust. It’s often said that the best way to see the future is to understand the past. History at Plymouth will help you do just that, giving you the tools to make a difference to tomorrow. Explore five centuries of human history and combine studies of key periods like the Tudors and the Cold War, with a wider range of specialisms such as Japanese or nautical history in the birthplace of Sir Francis Drake. At Plymouth, your degree really is what you make it. From your second year, you can choose to add in modules from across any of the School of Society & Culture’s 17 disciplines. You can explore the interface between literature and history with a module in English or better understand the politics of the historical events that have shaped global development through modules in International Relations. Challenge your thinking and unpick the role of history and historians in the world today, exploring how TV documentaries are structured or asking why people might pull down a statue. Focus on the core skills employers are looking for and get hands-on through placements with local organisations and historical sites like The Box and the Rame Peninsula, under the constant mentoring of our published academics. Field trips will help you connect more directly with the past, including the first year trip to London where you’ll see behind the scenes of key locations like the Houses of Parliament and the Tower of London. Our international exchange programme gives students the opportunity to travel and spend a semester or year with one of our partner institutions in Canada or North America. What our students think: “The enthusiasm and passion of the lecturers in our department is incredible.” – Amy Stokes, BA (Hons) History
