Course Summary

If you are interested in geology and earth sciences but don’t have the qualifications to apply for a degree, this could be the foundation year for you. Build your skills and knowledge on a one year course from which you’ll have the right to progress, subject to achieving the relevant technical skills, onto the first year of our geology degrees. Progress onto the BSc (Hons) Applied Geology, Geology, Geology and Ocean Science, Physical Geography and Geology suite of degrees. You also have the option to later transfer from these degrees to our masters level MGeol degree. Apply the latest techniques in the laboratory and the field - through training and extensive fieldwork in the UK and further afield in for example Spain, Sicily, Cyprus and Death Valley, USA. Stand out in subject specialisms by choosing from engineering geology, mineral resources, hydrocarbons, GIS and many more. Benefit from a degree accredited by the Geological Society of London. Focus on practical and professional skills meaning you’ll graduate primed to enter the workplace. We also maintain a wide range of links with industry. Kickstart your career - our students have gone on to careers in all aspects of geology and all parts of the world. *Benefit from attending the largest university-based Geocareers Fair. We organise the event and it’s attended by a range of employers who often send our own graduates to represent them. *Benefit from a full staff tutorial support programme and Peer Assisted Learning (PALS), the latter lead by students a year ahead of you so you can have a student’s perspective. Enhance your employability-take a work-based placement and/or collect data for your final year research project by undertaking field research in locations including Arctic Norway, Shetland, Rhum, southern France, the Spanish Pyrenees, the Alps and Cyprus The foundation year is an integral part of the extended degree. Completion of the foundation year will not lead to a separate award or qualification its own right but will provide access to Year 1 of your degree.
