The BSc (Hons) Events Management degree offers students the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to become employable and effective Event Managers who can operate worldwide in this exciting industry. Delivered over 4 or 5 years dependent on whether a placement of industrial experience is undertaken, this programme is characterised by a balance of knowledge with analytical and vocational skills. The course is structured so that students can build their expertise year on year. It starts with a foundation year, specifically designed to introduce and develop essential skills for success in Higher Education, including critical thinking and research skills, and the knowledge and understanding of key facets of business, accounting, and tourism, hospitality and events. In the second year, students further deepen their knowledge and understanding of the international event industry. The skills necessary for research, creative thinking and presenting findings professionally, both orally and in writing, are also further developed. From a practical event delivery perspective, students work with external clients with the support of the teaching team. In the third year, modules build upon the knowledge gained and students are encouraged to consider ideas and information from a more critical perspective, they are also expected to be able to apply knowledge to different scenarios. The practical skills taught, challenge students to plan, deliver and evaluate their performance as event managers. By the time students commence their final year they will be sufficiently prepared to work autonomously with external organisations, able to explore ideas critically, and conduct research competently with high levels of analytical and problem solving skills. Throughout the course, students are introduced to events in the public, private and voluntary sectors from a range of international perspectives. Skills, knowledge and practical insight will be provided through lectures, a wide range of different and challenging assignments, guest speakers and field trips. Practical experience is vital and numerous opportunities to work on live event projects will be provided. Another distinctive feature of this course is the development and embedding of a series of professional workshops at various stages of learning. In your foundation year, you’ll experience a supportive environment to assist you in the transition to successful study in higher education. You will learn for example about academic writing, critical thinking skills and begin to develop your research skills, as well as develop your knowledge and understanding through an introduction to key aspects of business, accounting and tourism, hospitality and events management. You’ll also have the opportunity to do independent research into an area of your studies that interests you, with a supervisor to guide and support you through the process. Year 1 will introduce you to how events fit into the exciting world of arts, entertainment and the media. You’ll discover the principles of design and learn what it takes to manage conferences and events. To round off the year, you’ll explore entrepreneurialism and potential careers in the events sector. Plus you’ll have the chance to study hospitality for events, or a language, including French, German, Mandarin or Spanish. In your second year you’ll develop your knowledge and skills by studying a range of core modules, getting hands-on experience managing and promoting specific events. You will enhance your health and safety knowledge through the crowd behaviour and risk management module. Understand how to get people to attend your event and enhance its reputation. You’ll investigate research methods, giving you the skills required to engage in both academic and business research – invaluable for placements or careers that involve market research. You’ll also have the chance to study optional modules, including festivals and event tourism or a language. After your second year, you’ll get the opportunity to undertake a paid industry placement. You’ll spend 48 weeks working with an organisation in the UK or abroad, across a wide range of sectors. You’ll apply the skills and knowledge you’ve gained over the past two years in the real world. You’ll immerse yourself in a professional environment enabling you to make a range of contacts – all invaluable when it comes to securing a job. Complete your placement and you’ll earn a Certificate of Industrial Experience. In your final year you’ll undertake the honours project, which allows you to pursue a specific interest that you’re passionate about, through a significant research-based exercise. You’ll gain a strategic understanding of the industry and its future perspectives, by engaging with event issues, such as crisis and disaster management. You can also choose to study a range of other subjects like leadership, event innovation, event consultancy and a language option.
