Course Summary

Medical imaging plays a central role in the diagnosis and management of patients. Increased demand for imaging coupled with recent advances and innovations in medical imaging technology are dramatically changing the role of the modern Diagnostic Radiographer and Sonographer. Diagnostic Radiographers take high-quality images to help diagnose conditions using a wide range of imaging modalities, including X-ray, Ultrasound, Fluoroscopy, Computerised Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Nuclear Medicine, Angiography and Mammography. Sonographers specialise in the use of Ultrasound to interpret and report on live images with increasing demand for fetal imaging and cancer diagnosis. Both professions work closely with patients and members of the wider health care team to ensure the delivery of high-quality care. The BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography with Foundation Ultrasonography course builds on the internationally-recognised success of the University of Plymouth’s Peninsula Medical School, which produces exceptionally well-prepared students entering clinical career pathways. Harnessing our extensive educational experience in delivering successfully evidence-based and innovative programmes, we have designed a contemporary programme which will prepare you for a diverse and exciting role in the modern workplace. Students on the Diagnostic Radiography with Foundation Ultrasonography programme will develop all of the radiography skills but through an extended programme, will also develop foundational knowledge and skills in ultrasound. Ultrasonography is usually offered through postgraduate training, making this programme unique. Starting from year 2 of the programme, students will receive intensive simulation, and will undertake additional clinical placements within a focused area of practice with regional ultrasound providers across the healthcare sector. It is appreciated that the graduate would require a preceptorship year to consolidate their knowledge before moving on to study at Level 7. This is also outlined in the HEE workforce strategy where the graduate would progress from Practitioner level (Band 5) to a Senior Practitioner level before then progressing to Advanced Practice. The programme has been designed to enable you to attain the core knowledge you need to be a safe and effective practitioner in diagnostic radiography, with the foundation in ultrasound enabling you to carry out limited, routine ultrasound scans with supervision, before embarking on further postgraduate ultrasound qualifications. The programme will support you to develop as a resilient professional with all the skills and attributes you will need to develop your career further. Learning opportunities are interactive and engaging, often within small groups, where clinically focussed learning ensures optimal preparation for future practice. You also have opportunities to learn alongside other healthcare professionals. This inter-professional team learning provides you with invaluable experience and insight into how your role fits within the wider healthcare community. In Plymouth, you will also have unprecedented radiographic access to the only purpose-built Radiology Academy in the world and one of the largest teaching hospitals in Europe, as well as state-of-the-art virtual dissection and imaging facilities. The University of Plymouth BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography with Foundation Ultrasonography is subject to Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) approval. Graduates of approved programmes are eligible to apply for HCPC registration.
