**Would you like to work in a museum or gallery, managing events and exhibitions that explore history or celebrate heritage? From arts archiving and
project management, to curatorial practice and visitor experience - you could play a pivotal part in connecting audiences with artefact.**
BA (Hons) Museum Studies at Plymouth College of Art will equip you with the skills and competencies used by museum professionals to explore the diverse roles that museums play in contemporary society. You’ll also uncover historical contexts and the cultural role of objects and their power to communicate collective experience. This degree is designed to provide an initial broad introduction to the practical skills required to work in museum and heritage contexts with a mixture of lecture based instruction and hands-on activities.
The course provides a wide range of opportunities to explore new thinking about museums and heritage, preparing you to enter an exciting and changing field. You will learn about the applications used to provide digital access to museum collections with our staff expertise in digital technologies, whilst critically exploring heritage in relation to debates about social justice, where a commitment to diversity involves the recovery of neglected or obscured histories.
Learning is also enriched by exciting national and regional relationships, including with Tate Modern, The Box, Plymouth, and other major regional museum centres. Plymouth College of Art is also home to The Gallery, an on-campus venue hosting a vibrant programme of contemporary art, media and design exhibitions, including major touring exhibitions like the British Art Show, which Plymouth will welcome back as host city in 2021.
You will be taught by our team of highly experienced academic staff, all of whom are active makers and researchers in critical and cultural practice. Standard Qualification Requirements
Although many of our students do come in with top grades and high UCAS points, these aren’t necessarily
essential for entry. We typically ask for a minimum of 112 UCAS points, but we understand that talented
artists, designers and makers can have a wide range of relevant strengths and skills beyond formal
qualifications. We’re just as interested in exploring your portfolio and discussing your creative experiences as we are in seeing your grades.
Your application will tell us about your qualifications and previous experience, but studying the arts is about more than can be captured on forms. We need to find out about your creative potential, your abilities and idiosyncrasies, so we will invite you to talk about your work with a member of our HE academic team. You can tell us about your aspirations, and why you want to study at the college. It is also a good moment to find out what we can offer you.
We encourage you to visit the college, so that you can see our facilities, meet our teaching and technical staff, and discuss any other queries you may have; however we appreciate this may not be possible, and are happy to talk to you via an online platform (such as Google Meet or similar).
We accept a range of international qualifications and will look at each application individually.
