You’ll investigate a variety of production contexts and aesthetics, enabling you to contribute fresh ideas to contemporary moving image culture and the creative industries. Armed with a thorough understanding of the demands of filmmaking, you’ll have the opportunity to produce your own films, creating imaginative and challenging personal work.
You’ll develop skills from writing and production design to cinematography and editing. You will learn research, planning and organisational skills to support your practical work. Study with us and you’ll expand your critical approach alongside developing skills in research and analysis. Our academically robust and intellectually stimulating degree programmes are delivered by our team of academics, technical demonstrators and invited experts who together deliver excellence in learning, teaching and assessment. Our programmes encourage diversity in thinking and making - from practical applications through to reflective, analytical writing.
Our facilities include film and green screen studios, sound recording and post-production studios and Foley studio space. Our Equipment Resource Centre is stocked with a wide range of kit, including 4K HD cinematography, Super 16mm film, underwater film resources, professional sound design apparatus and extensive support equipment. Our professional post-production editing facilities utilise current professional software packages including Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer and Pro Tools.
We have a team of highly experienced lecturers and technicians, and offer a visiting lecturer programme of internationally recognised cinematographers and editors. In recent years we have welcomed Jan Harlan, Ben Wheatley and Walter Campbell to campus.
Our programme has links with NAHEMI, BFI, the Royal Television Society and the Aesthetica Short Film Festival, as well as independent filmmaking professionals. Students have the opportunity to attend international film festivals, work in partnership with Plymouth Arts Cinema (an independent arts cinema located on campus) and with external clients.
Course Details - Modules
You’ll develop hands-on film production skills, from writing and production design to cinematography and editing, and will explore theoretical approaches to contemporary filmmaking.
You will have the opportunity to work with external clients on professional jobs throughout the programme, and will be supported to develop yourself as a filmmaking professional, in whatever context best suits you as an individual.
Our students have had their films selected for screening at a huge range of international film festivals, including Aesthetica Film Festival, the Paris Festival Signe de Nuit, Slamdance (Utah), New York Tribeca Film Festival, Raindance International Film Festival, London Short Film Festival, Encounters Film Festival, MOCCA (Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art), and Cornwall Film Festival, winning Best Student Film. We have won a whole host of Royal Television Society Awards, including Best UK Undergraduate Fiction, and this year won NAHEMI Eat Our Shorts Best Film (audience voted), and Plymouth Film Festival ‘Best Student Film’.

Standard Qualification Requirements
Although many of our students do come in with top grades and high UCAS points, these aren’t necessarily essential for entry. We typically ask for a minimum of 112 UCAS points, but we understand that talented artists, designers and makers can have a wide range of relevant strengths and skills beyond formal qualifications. We’re just as interested in exploring your portfolio and discussing your creative experiences as we are in seeing your grades.
Your application will tell us about your qualifications and previous experience, but studying the arts is about more than can be captured on forms. We need to find out about your creative potential, your abilities and idiosyncrasies, so we will invite you to talk about your work with a member of our HE academic team. You can tell us about your aspirations, and why you want to study at the college. It is also a good moment to find out what we can offer you.
