Course Summary

An exciting opportunity to study current issues related to the expanding sector of health and social care. Being the largest employment field in the South West region, this foundation degree has close links with local employment trends. The Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care, provides an opportunity to study key topics, as well as develop professional practice and employability skills within the health and social care field at degree level. Health Care and Social Care share common core values, skill base and underpinning knowledge that is reflected in this exciting, challenging, and contemporary programme of study. The course content places itself within the current climate of partnership working and integration within the health care and social care field, and provides the learner with the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge across a range of thought-provoking and inspiring subject areas. Stage 1 of the course introduces you to a range of appropriate sector specific professional skills, including communication, counselling skills, working in teams, and reflective practice, as well as developing your academic graduate skills. Learners will be provided with the opportunity to develop their knowledge related to social change, health and social care legislation, social policy, lifespan development and understanding health and social care organisations through a range of innovative teaching and learning activities. Students will also develop knowledge of leadership and management skills, and the ethics and values of inclusive and diverse practice within the community through the exploration and analysis of professional practice. In Stage 2, you will build on this knowledge and are encouraged to develop skills as an independent learner and health and social care professional through both academic study and employability led activities in areas such as; mental health and wellbeing, young persons and community, and how to conduct research. Learners will also be part of the community based project module, working directly in partnership with leading community health and social care providers to deliver integrated care through an innovative range of planned activities. Learning within the community based project will also be supported through the study of Health Promotion and employability led delivery of an organised health promotion campaign. Learners are encouraged and supported to draw on their own professional practice and knowledge, the lecturing team have strong sector links and can support this continuing professional development. Opportunities to network with guest speakers, potentially access additional professional training and skills, and work in professionally relevant settings have been a feature of this Foundation Degree. We were awarded a Skills for Health Quality Mark in 2018.

Course Details – Assessment Method

An exciting range of relevant and innovative assessments are linked to this programme. Assessments are designed to reflect the essential academic and employability led knowledge and skills required to both study and work within a range of Health and Social care roles. Written assignments up to 3000 words, presentations, academic posters, seminars, life story/biography, academic scrapbooks, reflective journals, health promotion campaign, community based project, literature review and a research proposal. There are no exams.

Entry is welcomed from mature learners, those with sector experience, and those who have taken non-traditional paths through education. A Levels OR vocational qualifications (64 UCAS tariff points) or substantial and relevant work experience in an appropriate sector is also considered. Entry is welcome from mature students with relevant experience in place of these qualifications. Appropriate subject areas will normally be in the discipline of Children's Care and Development, Education, Psychology, Sociology, Health and Social Care, and related subjects, however qualifications in other subjects may be considered and discussed at interview. Learners without the relevant GCSE grades may be considered if they plan to undertake further study towards those qualifications.
