The Foundation Degree Art and Contemporary Craft is an innovative and ground-breaking interdisciplinary programme that explores visual arts unity and challenges the accepted orthodoxies within traditional Art and Craft practice. Students will have the required creative freedom to fully explore their creative potential alongside developing a consideration of economic sensibility and entrepreneurship. Students are encouraged to focus on applying their artistic creativity within freelance and entrepreneurial creative industry opportunities. Most modules are highly practical, within these various forms of research are undertaken. Traditional and non-traditional and highly techniques, processes and methodologies are supported with written reflective evaluation. This knowledge forms a part of commercial contextual awareness. Students are encouraged to develop their Art and Contemporary Craft practice into highly sought-after artefacts of professional quality that meet the demands of the competitive market place
Course Details - Modules
The modules you will study will include practical and theoretical work, embracing individual and group activities.
You will undertake various forms of research which will develop into experimentation - from which finished outcomes will emerge. This process is supported with critical-thinking essays, reflective documentation and evaluations.
You will explore 20th and 21st century Fine Art and Design practice, starting with traditional modes of expression like painting, drawing and print, where you will study formal elements such as colour tone and composition.
You will incorporate these methodologies through a variety of practical techniques that show keys processes in sculpture, studio ceramics, and commercial product design.
You will also learn how to make paint from scratch, as well as work with wood, stone and metal.
The breadth and depth of knowledge learned will ultimately be applied into specialist briefs, which are devised by students and incorporate professional and entrepreneurial guidelines designed to help you function as an artist in the wider world - including working in the public domain.
Course Details – Assessment Method
Assessments for practical projects take place at the end of each module. Students present their work to two staff and a student 'buddy' who records the session. Feedback is given by staff and marks are awarded and explained. The assessed student and buddy can then discuss the feedback and summarise the positive key elements. It is a transparent and positive process.
