This course, combining history and Russian language and culture, is open to absolute beginners, GCSE, AS, or A level students in Russian.
In history you will acquire the skills for writing and debating history, and an in-depth analysis of an area of your choice will help you to develop critical abilities. The Russian component aims to take you to a high level in Russian, enabling you to use the language in your career if you choose to.
Beginners’ Russian (including post-GCSE): you will follow an intensive language course designed to take you to degree level within four years
Post-A level students: begin language classes from a more advanced level.
Throughout, you will develop your language skills, increasingly targeting applied and employment-related situations as you progress. You will spend time in Russia to improve your fluency and confidence.
At each level you will be able to select modules in Russian and East European literature, history, cinema and cultural studies. The breadth of our research expertise means we are able to offer you an exceptionally broad choice and a course that promotes a deep understanding of what makes Russia the nation it is today.
Additionally, you have the chance to learn Serbian/Croatian, with additional third year abroad destination options.
Course Details - Modules
In year one you will take the core module Learning History introducing you to the skills and methodologies of historical research, together with modules from the early medieval period to the 20th century. If you already have an A level in Russian you will develop the four skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing. Beginners in the language will undergo intensive language tuition. You will also choose one or two optional modules which introduce the study of Russia and/or Eastern Europe through topics in culture, history, language and society and also give a grounding in essential study skills. Post-A level students also have the option of beginning Serbian/Croatian.
In year two you will be able to select history optional modules covering an extremely wide chronological and geographical range. Your language modules will target more advanced grammar and applications in preparation for the year abroad. To complement your Russian language studies, you will choose modules to suit your interests from the wide range on offer in Russian history, literature and cultural studies. All students (including those studying on the beginners' Russian track) have the opportunity to begin (or continue with) Serbian/Croatian.
The third academic year is spent abroad in Russia either studying at one of our partner universities or at a language school. If you are taking Serbian/Croatian, you will be able to divide your time to cover the countries of both languages.
In your final year you will apply your Russian language skills in high-level modules, including those dealing with employment related topics. You will also extend the skills and knowledge acquired earlier in the course in specialised modules on topics in which you have become particularly interested. We offer a wide range of options, taught by experts in areas from the Byzantine period to the present day and across literature, cinema, history and cultural studies. The year-long history Special Subject module, based on primary sources, enables you to get to grips with historical work at specialist level. In addition, you will take one module from a broad array of specialised options.
Placement and volunteering opportunities are available in the School of Humanities and the School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies, as well as via the Nottingham Advantage Award.
