Course Summary

Product design is the process of turning ideas into successful products. Using the latest manufacturing processes and technologies, our course combines design and creativity skills with engineering, science and technological knowledge. You will be taught by teaching staff, experienced in areas including medical office and kitchen equipment, electronic goods and automotive goods Designers will support you to become confident in using digital presentational and prototyping techniques expected in industry. The course is very project-based and you are encouraged to submit your work to design competitions outside the university. This fully accredited programme is a five-year masters degree and provides the preferred route to achieving Chartered Engineer status. You will spend year four working in industry.

Course Details - Modules

The first year offers a broad foundation in engineering science and design, manufacturing processes, material selection and mathematics. Example modules include Drawing for Design, Statics and Dynamics and Materials and Manufacturing. In year two, you will develop your design skills and commercial awareness whilst working on multiple design projects. In the third year you will take an individual project as well as core modules in product development, ergonomics and manufacturing processes. At the end of year three you will work a year in industry whilst receiving support from your tutor and our industrial placements team. Year five will give you the opportunity to undertake a major project with industry whilst you undertake further modules in project management and ergonomics.

This qualification is only acceptable when combined with Advanced Higher grade AA including Mathematics

The Access to HE Diploma is not accepted for this course. Applicants should apply for the relevant BEng course.
