**About Physics at the University of Nottingham** We have a proud history of learning and innovation. Research undertaken within the School of Physics and Astronomy, by Professor Sir Peter Mansfield, was recognised with a 2003 Nobel Prize for the invention of Magnetic Resonance Imaging scanners. This technology has already helped more than half a billion people worldwide. More recently, our use of quantum technologies to understand how the brain works is changing the way that neurological conditions are detected and treated. Our research activity spans the breadth of modern-day physics: from nanoscience, ultracold atoms, to ground-breaking investigations into dark energy and theoretical cosmology. In recognition of our international reputation in these areas, we are ranked join third in the UK for research quality in physics (Research Excellence Framework 2014). You will gain hands-on experience through research projects and the opportunity for paid summer internships in the School. Our courses offer a wide range of optional modules, so you can explore new areas of physics and specialise in the ones that interest you the most, and learn from experts in those fields. What’s more, there is flexibility to transfer between most physics courses after the first year. We have received the highest rating of ‘Gold’ for teaching excellence (Teaching Excellence Framework 2017). Some of our teaching staff share their love of physics with budding scientists worldwide through the popular Sixty Symbols YouTube channel. Our unique, student centred MSci course offers innovative teaching methods, with few to no exams in the final year. Employers of our graduates include Accenture, EDF Energy, Jaguar Land Rover, and various NHS Trusts. Roles include Trainee Clinical Scientist, Medical Physicist, Systems Engineer, Data Analyst and Software Development Engineer. Many of our students go on to further study at PhD level in the UK and overseas. **Physics with Year in Industry MSci** This course gives you the opportunity to spend a year on placement with an industrial partner. The placement will allow you to apply your learning to a practical setting within a physics-related industry. Industry experience is a great way to explore future career options. The skills you learn and the networks you build will greatly improve your employability. Our unique final year will develop your professional and transferrable skills with immersive, student-centred learning. You will focus on fewer but more specialised areas and complete a year-long research project. Under the guidance of our expert staff you will benefit from a range of learning styles. These include group work, projects, delivering seminars and independent learning.

Course Details - Modules

First year modules will build up your knowledge of key practical, mathematical and computational skills. Core modules include Mathematics for Physics and Astronomy, and Computing for Physical Science. In the second year, you will continue to build a solid foundation of physics knowledge. You'll also have the opportunity to choose a range of specialist modules in different areas of physics. These optional modules include The Structure of Galaxies, Force and Function at the Nanoscale, and Principles of Dynamics. You will spend your third year on an industrial placement. The placement year will apply your learning to an industry setting and help you investigate future careers options. The school has a dedicated Placement Coordinator to help you identify the company and role that suits you. Core modules in the fourth year include Introduction to Solid State Physics, and Quantum Dynamics. MSci students will receive additional support to help prepare for independent learning in the final year. In the final year, you will work on a range of activities, projects and presentations. You will also carry out a major research project, either involving consultancy work in industry or collaboration within one of our research groups.
