Religion and philosophy are two of the most profound influences on individuals and society. By studying them together you'll get to understand:
- the overlaps and differences between the two
- how they can support and disagree with each other
- their personal, historical, and cultural importance
You'll cover issues from the deeply personal to society-wide concerns, giving you a greater understanding of different ways of living.
This degree will transform how you think and feel about fundamental issues of human existence.
**Theology**
- Study biblical writings together with key thinkers, ideas, events and movements that shaped the course of Western Christian thought
- Examine the key texts, thinkers, ideas and events in the history of Islam and Judaism
- Opportunity to learn ancient Greek and Hebrew
**Philosophy**
- Study topics, figures, and themes from across the Western, Indian and Chinese traditions
- Explore crime and justice, race and gender, politics and religion, the environment and society
- Learn to apply philosophical thinking to everyday issues
You don't need to have formally studied either Theology or Philosophy to take this degree.
**Combine with other subjects**
You may also combine Theology and Philosophy with other subjects in our Liberal Arts BA.
Course Details - Modules
Years one and two are a mix of core and optional modules. You'll study both subjects equally and get a solid foundation in the essentials of both disciplines. You'll also be able to choose areas to study that either deepen your existing knowledge or allow you to explore something new.
In year three you choose freely across both subjects. Continue to explore widely or specialise in a theme as your interests develop.
If you choose to write a dissertation you can do this in either subject or combine both into a single piece of work.
Placement and volunteering opportunities are available both within the course as well as via the Nottingham Advantage Award. You can also spend time overseas through the Study Abroad programme.
