Not only will you gain access to additional source texts, but also a whole new way of understanding our shared past.
Fully immerse yourself in your chosen language(s) and culture(s) on a year abroad in year three. Taking this time will not only see your language abilities grow towards fluency but you'll also have the opportunity to grow in independence and confidence.

**I want to learn one language from beginners' level**
- You may choose from: German, Russian or Spanish.
- You will spend two thirds of your time getting to grips with your chosen language/culture in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures and one third of your time on your selected modules from the Department of History.
**I want to learn one language post-A level**
- You may choose from: French, German, Russian or Spanish
- You’ll spend two thirds of your time continuing your chosen language/culture in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures and one third of your time on your selected modules from the Department of History.
**I want to learn two languages, one from beginners' level and one from post-A level**
- The following are available as post-A level languages: French, German, Spanish or Russian
- The following are available as beginners' languages: French, German, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian/Croatian or Spanish
- You’ll spend two thirds of your time in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures learning your beginners' language/culture and your post-A level language/culture. The final third will be spent on your selected modules from the Department of History.

- You may choose: French, German, Russian, Spanish
- You’ll spend two thirds of your time continuing your chosen languages/cultures in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures and one third of your time on your selected modules from the Department of History.
Course Details - Modules
In year one you will study 40 credits of core history modules and 80 credits in your chosen language(s).
If your language is post-A level you will take 20 credits of core language and 20 credits of core language and 20 credits of core or optional modules (if studying two languages) or 60 credits of core and optional modules (if studying one language).
If you are a beginner in French, German, Russian or Spanish, you will take 40 credits of core language modules.
If you are a beginner in Portuguese or Serbian/Croatian, you will take 20 credits of core language and 20 credits of core or optional modules.
In year two you will study 40 credits of history modules and 80 credits in language(s). Whether you started the course as a beginner or with an A level in your chosen language(s), you will take 20 credits of core language modules and 20 credits of optional modules (if you are studying two languages) or 60 credits of optional modules (if you are studying one language).
You will spend your third academic year abroad dividing your time between countries where your chosen languages are spoken. Depending on where your placement is, you could study at one of our exchange universities, teach on the British Council assistantship programme, or undertake a work placement with a company.
You will spend year four back at Nottingham. You will develop your command of your languages and their use in increasingly sophisticated contexts, and study optional modules drawn from the areas of literature, history, society, media and linguistics.
In History, you will study a 40-credit special subject, engaging with the latest research in your selected area.
