Course Summary

This integrated undergraduate masters course explores the interplay between chemistry and biology to develop a specialist understanding of the two subjects. In your fourth year you will undertake a major research project in on a topic that interests you. This will help you further develop your practical ability, team working and problem-solving skills, in addition to academic literature and presentation skills. Studying in our modern facilities will give you valuable practical experience, preparing you for a wide range of careers. Our students go on to work in a variety of industries, including chemistry, physics and pharmaceuticals.  Employers of our previous graduates include leading organisations such as Boots, Cancer Research UK, the NHS and GlaxoSmithKline. We have been rated Gold for teaching excellence (Teaching Excellence Framework 2017). We offer small group tutorials to support your learning. You'll be taught by academic staff who will feed your curiosity for chemistry. Course Details - Modules

In the first year, you will take introductory modules in chemistry, physiology and pharmacology, including practical training. Our Mathematical Toolkit module is designed for students who do not have A level mathematics or equivalent. In the second year, you will cover topics in physical, inorganic and organic chemistry in more depth. You'll also study modules in spectroscopy, biological chemistry and pharmacology. This includes a case study on the development of a recent drug. In the third year, you will study advanced modules in chemistry and drug discovery. You can also choose from optional modules such as Complementary and Alternative Medicines, and Molecular Microbiology and Infections. In the fourth year, you will develop an in-depth research project in an area of your choice.
