More than 275 million people speak French across all five continents. It is the official language of 29 countries. You could communicate with the 80 million native speakers of this beautiful language. Are you interested in discovering more about the rich language, history, politics and culture of France and the Francophone world? French and Francophone Studies at Nottingham offers you this and much more. You can take modules in: - translation and interpreting - linguistics - art, theatre and photography - cinema - history and culture - politics - literature from around the Francophone world Live the life and culture of France or a French speaking country for yourself in year three. This exciting experience develops your communication skills, builds your confidence and helps you stand out to future employers. You can teach English in a School or work anywhere in the Francophone world. Or you can study at one of our partner universities, including Guadeloupe, La Reunion and Paris. **Other ways to study French**: This course is also available with a Foundation Year. You may combine French with another language (German, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish) on Modern Languages, or study it in joint honours with Contemporary Chinese Studies. French is an option in Modern Language Studies, Modern Languages with Business, Modern Languages with Translation and Modern European Studies. You may also combine French with subjects outside languages, in joint honours with English, Philosophy, International Media and Communications Studies or History, alongside multiple disciplines in our BA Liberal Arts, or in Economics with French and Law with French and French Law. This course is not open to beginners of French, but we have beginner's pathways on the following courses: English with French BA, French and Contemporary Chinese Studies BA, French and History BA, French and International Media and Communications Studies BA or French and Philosophy BA.

Course Details - Modules

In year one you will receive a firm grounding in the structures of French through the core language module and pursue introductory studies in reading French texts, contemporary France, French history and linguistics. You will take 40 credits of compulsory core modules introducing you to French language and culture. You will take your remaining credits studying optional modules relating to your degree course. In year two you will develop your language skills to prepare you for the year abroad. You will study a choice of modules aimed at developing your knowledge of France and Francophone countries and culture. Your third academic year is spent in France or a Francophone country either on a programme of studies in a higher education institution, working as an assistant in a school or on a work placement. In year four you will perfect your command of the French language and its use in increasingly sophisticated contexts and study optional modules drawn from a list covering a wide range of topics in the fields mentioned in the course description. You also have the option to do a dissertation. Placement and volunteering opportunities are available in the School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies, as well as via the Nottingham Advantage Award.

This qualification is only acceptable when combined with Sottish Advanced Highers at grades AB including French.
