The Bible is powerful and influential. Its interpretation changes with time, place, culture, and politics.
You'll develop your own answers to questions about the Bible, such as:
- How was the Bible created?
- What did religion, politics, war or gender look like in the biblical world?
- What does the Bible say about ethics and the character of God?
- What did the various texts mean to their original audiences?
- What does Biblical Studies have to offer the 21st century?
- How should we read the Bible today?
We have one of the most robust biblical Greek and Hebrew programmes in the country. You'll have the option to examine the biblical texts in their original languages even if you've never studied Greek or Hebrew before.
Our staff include biblical scholars, theologians, philosophers, historians and sociologists. This diversity strengthens your studies and broadens your views.
No previous academic experience of Bible Studies or Theology are needed to do this degree.
**Combine with another subject**
You can also combine Theology with other subjects in our Liberal Arts BA.
Course Details - Modules
The first two years are a combination of core and optional modules. You'll build solid foundations in Theology and Bible Studies allowing you to specialise later. Your optional choices allow you to deepen existing knowledge or explore something new.
You'll have the opportunity to study biblical Hebrew and/or Greek - particularly recommended if you're thinking about postgraduate study.
You can also take modules in another subject to explore another subject or examine a Theology and Biblical Studies topic from another angle.
At the core of the third year is the compulsory dissertation. This is your opportunity to do an in-depth piece of work on a topic of your choosing. Apart from this you have a free choice of modules, allowing you to develop your particular interests within Theology and Biblical Studies.
There are work placement and volunteering opportunities available within the department and via the Nottingham Advantage Award. You can also spend time overseas through the Study Abroad programme.
