Course Summary

This is one of the most highly regarded courses in the country, with an enviable employment record. Our close relationship with partnership schools means you gain a wide experience of teaching in many different kinds of educational settings, from large inner-city academies to small, rural schools. This four year course gives you the opportunity to extend your skills and prepare you fully for placements, meaning you enter the classroom as a more confident and innovative teacher. In year Three, you will benefit from the option to focus on teaching either the 3 – 7 age range or the 5 – 11 age range, although the award of QTS qualifies you to teach across both age ranges. With a four year course, we can include an in depth Leading Primary / Early Years Practice module which can be studied at Masters level. Successful completion at Masters level will result in 60 credits towards a full Masters degree.

Course Details - Modules

Year 1 and 2: you will focus on your professional development and learn about how children learn in educational contexts. The broad base of these two years allows you to learn to teach areas of the curriculum and to work in schools with children across the 3-11 age range. Years 3 and 4: you opt to specialise in either Early Years or Primary Education. The Early Years strand specialises in the 3-7 age range and encompasses both the Foundation years and Key Stage One. The primary route specialises in the 5-11 age phase; both Key Stage One and Key Stage Two. You will continue to study the core subjects, however 5-11 strand students opt to specialise in a cluster of foundation subjects, whilst 3-7 strand students take a broader and more holistic approach to learning and development. Whichever option you take, you are still qualified to teach across the whole of the 3-11 age range.
