Course Summary

Students consistently rank our History degree at Newman as one of the best courses of its type in the UK, scoring 100% overall student satisfaction in the 2020 National Student Survey. As historians we do not fruitlessly seek to understand the past. We strive to understand the living (Bloch, 1949). This course takes Bloch’s underlying assertion and provides space for historians (academics and students) to engage directly with the issues which affect their lives. The content of this degree will allow students to explore the study of history in connection to active and informed citizenship. It will equip students with the critical skills to contribute to current debates about the direction of our society, the operations of liberal democracy and the organisation of our communities. Not only do our students learn how the past has been used to explain and rationalise the present, but, throughout this module, they are encouraged to become informed and active participants in shaping our future. **Why study History?** • Study a broad curriculum covering global history from the ancient to the modern world • Consistently ranked as one of the best History degrees in the UK for student satisfaction • Undertake a career placement module that offers real-world career experience • You will be assessed through written and oral coursework with the opportunity to negotiate some assessment types with your tutor.
