Course Summary

This course provides core professional training in teaching for staff who would like to work in the area of lifelong learning, addressing the Education and Training Foundation (ETF) National Standards for Teaching and Learning in Further and Post-Compulsory Education. It comprises a single course that can be taken at two levels, either the Certificate in Education (Cert Ed) or the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). This course is equivalent to the Level 5 Diploma in Education & Training (DET). The course is designed for people who like to teach students aged over 16 years old. Successful applicants will also become students of the University of Bedfordshire and have access to their facilities and amenities. On successful completion you will be qualified to practice as a teacher or trainer in the lifelong learning and further education sector. Further courses can be taken at the University of Bedfordshire either to improve subject specialism or to further career prospects. You will also be able to apply for Professional Formation for Teachers and Trainers in the Lifelong Learning and FE Sector (QTLS / ATLS) status. This course is suitable for those with a degree qualification, or those with a Level 3 qualification within a specific subject. If you do not have at least Level 2 English and maths (GCSEs grades A*-C/9-4) qualifications you will be required to achieve these within the year. You must be willing to undergo Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance. Some appropriate teaching-related experience and a successful interview will also be required. This course runs as both a full-time pre-service one year course, or a two year part-time, in-service course. For the full-time route placements will be arranged at Bedford College or Tresham College. To start the part-time, in-service course you must be teaching in post-compulsory education (further, higher or adult) for at least 50 hours per academic year.
