The course aims to provide a comprehensive study of photography to meet the creative and commercial needs of an image-based world. There is an emphasis on the skills valued by employers in the creative sector, making ‘live’ client-based assignments integral to the course. Study will focus on many aspects of photography including: Documentary; Reportage; Fine Art; Studio and Commercial Photography, using both digital and darkroom-based techniques. You will make use of our industry standard software and modern studios to ensure that you refine your skill set to meet employability requirements.
On completion of the HND course you will be able to pursue a career in the photography industry in a range of areas including – Photographic Studios, Media and Photographic Journalism. The skills you will develop will also prepare you for setting up your own business and to work as a freelance photographer.
You will also have the option to apply to top up the HND to a full BA Hons degree at a number of universities. We will work with you to tailor your final year in preparation for any such application.
Course Details - Modules
Offering a number of creative arts courses at degree level enables us to offer collaborative tasks to simulate real life work practices – we often run tasks where you will be part of a wider photography, graphic design and fashion team to enable you to hone your team working and employability skills.
We also have guest speakers contribute throughout the course to ensure your creative thinking processes are explored to their maximum and you consider all options available to you when working on assessments and projects.
You will benefit from individualised and focused feedback on your work on a regular basis throughout the course. The course also includes a subsidised trip* to a European City which is linked to an assessed assignment. Previous locations have included Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Berlin and Edinburgh. *subject to availability

This course is 100% coursework. Assessments vary from presentations, essays, workshops, sketchbook critiques and “live” client based projects. The course is 60% practical and 40% written.

Standard Qualification Requirements
Applicants must have GCSE (or equivalent) English at grade C (grade 4) or above AND - A BTEC National Diploma or other relevant level 3 qualification, preferable in a relevant subject OR A minimum of one A Level preferably in a relevant subject OR An Access to Higher Education Certificate OR Appropriate industry experience (please provide details on application). As a guideline, a typical offer would require you to obtain a UCAS tariff score of between 32 - 48 points, based on your level 3 studies. You will be invited to attend an interview and have an assessment of your portfolio of work.
