.FdA Surface Design Practitioner is a new and exciting programme developing surface design skills for the career pathways of Fashion, Interior and Product Design. Creating enterprising students who are work ready; as they build skills to develop their own design practice. Entrepreneurship is focussed within visual communication, branding, networking, styling and promotion. FdA Surface Design Practitioner creates innovative skills and techniques for print and manipulated surfaces with a focus upon commerciality for industry. The first year of the course starts the process of setting up a freelance practice and learning how to network, promote and brand your designs. The techniques for digital (CAD software) and also traditional techniques (visual studies, screen printing and manipulation of surfaces) are also delivered. The second year will be a deeper exploration of the first year and also an opportunity for the student’s personal design identity and career direction to be focused upon. Industry specialists from Fashion, Interiors and Product Design have a strong engagement within the programme. Live briefs, mentorships, placements and competitions are all delivered via industry experts. This will provide the opportunity for a wide range of career pathways; for example, designers within Fashion, Interiors, and Product Design, entrepreneurs, freelancers, independent and collective business owners within the UK and also world-wide. Additional industry related experiences include trips to Premier Vision, Paris and Design Shows and trade fairs both in London, Europe and New York. The course is suited for those interested and passionate about designing surfaces (print and manipulation) for the career pathways of Fashion, Interiors and Product Development. Creating hand rendered and digital illustrative drawings to take through to the design industry. Academic progression is available through a one-year BA (Hons) Creative Enterprise (Top-up) at Newcastle College University Centre. Or, full time employment or freelance for companies locally, nationally or internationally in job roles such as designers within Fashion, Interiors and Product Development. Also careers within Art & Design, Trend, Education, Research, Branding or Styling for example.

Year One: Surface Design, Practice Enrichment, Printed and Manipulated Surfaces, Work Related Learning, Academic Study Skills, Personal Development, Skills for Design 1. Year Two: Skills for Design 2, Professional Development, Contextual Studies 2, Work Based Learning, Alternative Techniques, Negotiated Brief, Portfolio Development. Entrepreneurship and a strong link with industry experts within Fashion, Interiors and Product Design will be a core focus through both years of study. The curriculum is delivered through varying approaches; this includes studio access, demonstrations, workshops, seminars, presentations, tutorials, critiques, and teamwork and peer assessment. The design process includes research skills, visual studies, development and transference to CAD. Techniques taught include industry aligned CAD software including: Photoshop and Illustrator and screen-printing skills and manipulated surface techniques. Also, utilizing contemporary resources such as the lazer–cutter and 3D printer.

We aim to provide high quality learning opportunities using a wide variety of teaching and learning strategies. Methods vary from practical studio delivery to seminar, case-studies, work-based learning and team learning. Underlying this is a philosophy of initial support leading to greater independence in your skills acquisition and use. Work experience opportunities and industry-led projects and collaborations are features of the course. You will be assessed through the outcomes of the modules you will study. A range of practical and theoretical activities will determine your final grades.
