Course Summary

On this course you will be working with experienced design professionals who will help you to refine your analytical, creative and problem solving skills. Live project work with external clients will be combined with internally set project briefs. The course has a focus on employability and aims to equip you with the specific skills demanded by employers in the creative sector. Many of our previous students have gained careers in areas including - Marketing, Interior Design,UK wide Graphic Design Agencies, Illustration, Teaching and as self-employed Graphic Designers. Completing the HND can also lead to a Level 6 ‘Top-Up’ year to gain a full BA Degree. Support for applications can be provided by the University Centre and course team.

Course Details - Modules

This course has been designed to develop visual communication skills with the latest graphic design software tools. Drawing, print, photography, mixed media and other traditional image-making techniques are combined with digital processes and techniques to enable you to perform as a flexible, creative and employable design professional. Gallery/museum visits and guest speakers are key supplementary elements which provide credence to the course and ensure you develop a range of skills suited to the design industry. The course also includes a subsidised trip* to a European City which is linked to an assessed assignment. Previous locations have included Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Berlin and Edinburgh. *subject to availability Modules studied include*: Visual Communication; Ideas Generation and Development; Contextual and Cultural Referencing; Design Method; Packaging in Graphic Design; Digital Image Creation and Development; Art Direction for Advertising; Personal Style in Graphic Design; Advanced Typographic Design; Photographic Materials Techniques and Technology. *Modules may be subject to change

Course Details – Assessment Method

Assessments are portfolio based and include critiques, presentations and group work. You will be tasked with creating graphic design projects in a range of mediums. You will also have the opportunity to present to external clients to ensure you are ready for your next career step.

Applicants must have GCSE (or equivalent) English at grade C (grade 4) or above AND - A BTEC National Diploma or other relevant level 3 qualification, preferable in a relevant subject OR A minimum of one A Level preferably in a relevant subject OR An Access to Higher Education Certificate OR Appropriate industry experience (please provide details on application). As a guideline, a typical offer would require you to obtain a UCAS tariff score of between 32 - 48 points, based on your level 3 studies. You will be invited to attend an interview and have an assessment of your portfolio of work.
