Course overview: A highly creative, ideas based course tailored to meet the specific needs of this exciting and evolving industry. Mentored by experienced, practicing tutors you will develop a portfolio covering traditional print, digital, advertising, branding, corporate identity, illustration and typography. The course has an impressive network of professional contacts, and an excellent record for working on live briefs, winning awards, and placing students into employment. Past students have won D&AD and YCN awards for seven consecutive years. Students present their work to industry through both local exhibitions, and within a major London venue as part of D&AD’s New Blood Festival. Areas of study: You will study the following compulsory units: graphic design practices, techniques and processes, professional development and professional practices, external design projects, typography, collaborative and advanced design projects and contextual studies. You will also study specialist units of: communication in graphic design, branding and identity, art direction, surface design and conceptual design practices. Staff expertise: You will benefit from highly-experienced, enthusiastic practicing tutors who have worked with Tesco, M&S, The Royal Opera House; Ministry of Sound; Coca-Cola; MTV; Ben & Jerry’s; Bosch; Sony PlayStation; The Beano; Centre Parcs and The Daily Telegraph. Industry links: We offer opportunities to undertake paid work experience, with recent placements at: Jam (London), Ted Baker, Bonfire Design, World of Initials. In the second year, you will gain first-hand work experience trading under our in-course design company ‘Bridge’, tackling live, external fee-paying projects. Future options: On successful completion of the HNC you can progress on to further study with our HND or choose to enter employment. On successful completion of the HND you can move directly into employment within the advertising and design industry, or alternatively top-up the qualification to our Graphic Communication BA (Hons) Top-up.

During the course you will study the following modules: Professional Development Contextual Studies Contextual and cultural referencing Individual Project Techniques and Processes Typography Graphic Design Practices Communication in Art & Design Surface Design You will be taught how to use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign in term 1.

Course Details – Assessment Method

As part of this course you will work with a range of specialist lecturers (including practising designers and consultants) in well-equipped studios and workshops. Project briefs will be set for each assignment, and assessment is continuous throughout the course.

Additional Fee Information

Basic art & design equipment such as layout pads, pens, scalpel, ruler, and external hard drive as per materials list. Resource fee of £150 to cover all in-studio colour laser printing, use of specialist studio materials, papers and adhesives, provision of studio journals, two key texts, visiting speakers’ travel expenses and for completing students a contribution towards exhibiting at a major London venue. Developing a personal portfolio (completing students) and self-promotional items approx. £100, and occasional visits by train to London. Fees subject to change.
