Course Summary

The HND in Creative Media Production (Film pathway) is a two-year practical exploration of filmmaking designed to make the most of your talents as a filmmaker through exciting and varied projects. This course will offer you a place to develop and find direction for your work through in-depth and hands-on exploration of documentary, short film and music video formats. You will learn how to meet the demands of challenging commercial briefs, how to make your short films standout and how to ensure the success and credibility of your documentary work. You will be given masterclasses in lighting, camera, cinematography, directing, and producing, in addition to specialist workshops on studio music video shooting, green screening, audio, video editing, post-production and conceptualisation. Our contemporary media and film studios will place you in an environment fit for 21st century filmmaking. By exploring current techniques and trends in documentary, short film and music video production you will also gain an understanding of how these formats engage audiences and help you effectively progress your career in film. Our close knit team of specialist staff will coach and guide you to find your voice, develop a strong and unique body of work and position yourself in an increasingly exciting industry. The course will help you deepen your analytical thinking and will help develop your ability to plan, create and successfully manage ambitious and large scale projects. Throughout your studies you will develop the strong collaborative working, problem solving and communication skills that you will need to succeed. Our high quality professional coaching and 1 to 1 support will help focus your energies on effectively managing projects involving research and development of ideas, on learning about audiences and dissemination channels and most importantly, on making full use of current technologies to make the most of your vision and talents. Students will be invited to engage with networks and competitions as part of the programme. There will be opportunities to develop and enhance your professional resume. In your second year you will extend your portfolio work to include more large scale projects involving collaboration with others and helping you to find your place in the industry.

Course Details – Assessment Method

You will be set projects and assignments to complete and receive ongoing formative feedback throughout. You will also be given final summative grades at the end of projects. When being awarded final grades you will also have details of how to focus your next steps and development. Assessments could include presentations, production of written documents, portfolio elements and research.

Students undertaking higher level education need to have a commensurate level of understanding of the English language so as to be able to achieve their qualification. In the case of applicants for whom English is a second language, the interviewer and Central Admissions Team must assure themselves of the applicant’s ability to function at IELTS English Level 5.5 (or equivalent). This is in line with the requirements of the awarding and validating bodies. Where applicants do not hold an IELTS qualification at 5.5 or equivalent, the Central Admissions will ask the applicant to sit an online test (BKSB) to check the suitability of the applicant’s English level prior to interview. Photographic identification will be required. Applicants who have recently completed (i.e. in the last 2 years) a formal programme of study in English at an appropriate level (such as a level 3 BTEC or ‘A’ level) prior to starting their Higher National are considered to be at a suitable level of English without requiring additional evidence..
