Course Summary

The BA (Hons) Music is a one-year course that will provide music performers and production students the opportunity to hone their craft and to focus on a career in the music industry. If you have a vocational qualification at level 5 (e.g. an HND) or a foundation degree you can convert that into a full degree with all the benefits that entails. A number of units will allow you to choose the academic and practical topics that you will cover in extended projects enabling you to determine the material you will be studying and creating. You will gain a deeper understanding of cultural theory and how music fits into the wider framework of society, philosophy and other creative disciplines. You will work as a team on collaborative projects involving college initiatives such as the in-house record label and radio station or cross discipline with Creative Arts or Performing Arts students. Your creativity will be stretched through exploring sound and technology in performance or installation. You will be taught by industry experienced staff, and visiting professionals, on industry standard equipment you will learn in a small groups through a combination of one-to-one teaching, seminars, practical workshops and collaborative group work. You will build on the skills you already possess and integrate new technical, theoretical and creative understanding to create a portfolio of work to support your aspirations in entering the music industry.

Course Details – Assessment Method

Assessment Strategies will include: Essays, Reports, Presentations, Seminars / Vivas, Critical reflection, Ongoing assessment, Performances / practical examinations, Practical Portfolios, Installations/interactive sound works, Vlogs/Blogs. Formative assessment will be supportive and tailored allowing students to develop their projects and skills effectively whilst allowing swift identification of students who may need additional intervention. There will be one-to-one tutorials to support individual work particularly in the Dissertation & Creative Project units. Peer assessment and tutor observation will be ongoing in sessions to facilitate effective group working. Interim deadlines for drafts and planning materials will create a more formal formative process to reinforce this ongoing work. Summative assessment instruments will be designed to fully cover the intended learning outcomes with an appropriate depth and volume of work as expected by the credit weighting and level of the unit. Assessments will be staggered in order to ensure the workload on the student is realistic and achievable. There will be a variety of assessment types utilised (see above) in order to give variety and interest to the tasks but also to ensure that equality of opportunity for students with different skill sets is catered for. Where possible industry relevant practice and ‘live‘ briefs will be utilised to give relevance to the assessment process. Work will be double marked to ensure consistent assessment standards.
