Course Summary

The course aims to develop your knowledge, skills and understanding about learning and teaching in a diverse range of educational contexts, including Primary, Secondary and Special Education provision. As a result, the focus is on your practice, with a work-based portfolio, Professional Practice in Education, where you are supported and encouraged to be critically reflective practitioners. In addition, there are assignments and projects (such as those contained in the modules Additional Needs and Inclusion and the Core Curriculum, which aim to demonstrate and build on your knowledge and experience in this field. It is expected that as full-time students you will attend college for 16 hours per week for 30 weeks with additional time in placement and in directed study equating to 21 hours. Part-time students follow an equivalent study pattern over an extended academic year of 40 weeks

Course Details – Assessment Method

A number of Teaching methods will be utilised to support and assess you, including seminars, lectures, interactive workshop sessions as well as ‘Blended Learning’ methods drawing on our virtual learning environment (VLE) as well as allocated tutorial support. Study skills are a major aspect of the programme and are incorporated into many of the modules such as: Study skills within research will be implemented as a learning strategy. You will access self-study resource materials and media on the VLE and internet. You will receive written and oral feedback to help you improve your future work. You are expected to work independently and responsibly throughout the duration of your course.

Standard Qualification Requirements

You must have achieved 48 UCAS tariff points from a Level 3 qualification or equivalent in a relevant subject.

You must be 18 years or over by 31 December in your first year of study. You must commit to gaining experience working in a school sector 4-19 and have access to 150 hours (as a minimum) working in an school setting (paid or voluntary work). You must also have a commitment to continuing professional development within in the school sector. You must have some experience working in a school sector 4-19 and whilst on the course you are expected to spend a minimum of 150 hours as a Teaching Assistant within an Educational setting. It is not a prerequisite of the course that you have a placement before starting the course; however, it is envisaged that you will gain a placement soon after you have commenced the programme. Furthermore, it is requirement of the course to complete the 150 hours in placement by the end of the year. Although, you are expected to find your own placement, assistance will be provided if required. You will also have to attend an interview prior to joining the programme and complete a written answer of 300 words outlining why you want to study on the degree programme and complete an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS check). To apply to Level 5/year two, you must have 120 credits at Level 4 degree or equivalent in a related discipline foundation. You must also have a commitment to continuing professional development in a school sector and complete an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS check).
