Course Summary

How do you support children to learn their multiplication facts so they truly know and understand them? If they struggle, what might the barriers be? If a child finds it difficult to carry out calculations, will they also struggle with exploring the properties of shapes? How does one area of mathematics connect to another? Our three-year course supports you to consider questions such as these, along with so many more. We prepare you to teach the wider primary school curriculum, as well as developing the specialist mathematics knowledge you’ll need to teach primary aged school children. You'll understand how children learn key concepts within mathematics, the barriers they may face and how you can nurture and develop this understanding. You’ll study English, mathematics, science and computing in children’s education as well as developing your knowledge to teach a broad and balanced curriculum of foundation subjects alongside this. Some of the practical skills you’ll learn include creative ways to teach reading, writing and expressive arts, how to plan lessons, and how to write learning plans for your class. As you progress you'll have the opportunity to focus more on discrete mathematics units, exploring innovative ways to teach mathematics, as well as improving your subject knowledge. These units help to prepare you to lead mathematics education in your school and support your colleagues in teaching mathematics in your future teaching career. Placements are a very important part of this course. On your placements, some of your day-to-day tasks might be teaching English, mathematics and foundation subjects (such as history and art), supporting children in the playground, and liaising with both parents and teaching professionals such as speech and language therapists who work with the children in your class. **Features and Benefits** - **Teaching excellence**- We've been training teachers for over 100 years. You’ll be taught by lecturers who have experience in teaching in primary schools. - **Real-world experience**- You’ll spend a minimum of 120 days on placements over the three years, gaining experience across the key stages. - **Study abroad**- There may be opportunities for enrichment visits to look at education and schools in other countries during the second year of the course. - **Qualified Teacher Status**- When you complete your degree you will graduate with QTS. - ** Community of teachers**- We train over 1,000 teachers every year, so you'll be joining a vibrant community of other student teachers and be able to share your experiences.
